Fitzroy Outdoor Cinema lights up in March

On Saturday the 20th of March the Atherton Gardens oval on Napier street will come alive with big screen entertainment, circus, music, and food for The Fitzroy Outdoor Cinema. Bring a rug and a pillow and come along and watch locally made short films and a feature film. Before the film, cinema-goers will be treated to a circus performance under the stars.

The aim of the Fitzroy Outdoor Cinema is to open up a little crack in the invisible wall that separates the rest of Fitzroy from the housing estate. Films will entertain us and relaxing under the stars together will give us a new perspective on where we live.

In the lead-up to the event, young people can get involved with Sunday afternoon workshops in February at Cubbies Adventure Playground. Westside circus and local filmmakers will be on hand to get you tumbling and to collaborate on capturing the creative circus antics for the big screen. In February watch out for Yarra Reporters’ roving camera team who will be on the streets of Fitzroy asking local residents what feature film they’d like to see. So far we’ve had suggestions ranging from rebel dancing in Footloose to musical Mary Poppins, cops and robbers comedy The Blues Brothers or Pixar’s animated Up.

In case it rains on the 20th of March we’ve scheduled a rain date of March the 27th. Our hope is for the cinema to become a regular monthly event next summer so that we can program a variety of films from different cultural groups. We’re also hoping to do lots more filmmaking during the year.
